The Doctorat is the third and final cycle of the LMD system, focused on original research carried out under the supervision of a research laboratory and a thesis director. It typically takes 3 years, though the actual duration depends on the research itself.
Doctoral candidates are attached to a research laboratory and, where one exists, a doctoral school within their field. Admission is competitive: a national entrance process reviews the candidate's Master results and research proposal.
Thesis defences (soutenances) are public university events and appear on the university agenda alongside other events, once scheduled.
